Susurrus (n.) a low soft sound, as of whispering, muttering or a quiet wind; a whisper or a rustling
susurrus is a new single written, recorded, and filmed by composer and multi-media artist Connor D’Netto and performed by violinist Shannon Reilly. susurrus is an exploration into ephemera, utilizing the boundless timbral possibilities and versatility of the violin. Opening with a simple set of alternating harmonics, a vast yet sparse texture opens up, buzzing and shimmering before giving way to fragments of lush lyricism and dazzling, energetic acrobatics, only to collapse back into the texture of the opening. Though written for solo violin, the work is enhanced by live electronic manipulation, utilising this to enhance these textural effects.
susurrus was recorded and filmed by D’Netto and Reilly on a metal catwalk inside the large resonant tank that sits at the top of the MASS MoCA Boiler House, a rusted relic from the industrial past. This collaboration was sparked at the Bang on a Can Summer Festival in 2017 where they also met violist and producer Josh Wareham, who sampled and looped the reverberant violin lines and textures of the piece, morphing it into the hip hop and electronic beat influenced second track on the release.
